Milburn Varner

Milburn L. Varner, age 81 passed away at his home in Soddy Daisy on October 1 2018. Milburn was preceded in death by his parents, William C and Gertrude B Varner. He was of the United Methodist faith.
Milburn is survived by his wife of 61 years Anna (Ann) Brown Varner, his son Charles Alan (Leah June) Varner, his beloved granddaughter Claire Addyson Varner, his sister Patricia Ann Varner Rehring, sister- in-law Shirley Brown Wilson, Brother-in-law David (Karen) Rehring and several nieces and nephews.
At the age of 4 Milburn contacted polio and later became the March of Dimes poster boy.
Milburn was employed with Austin Chrysler Plymouth in Chattanooga for 12 years before opening Varner’s Automotive in Soddy Daisy in 1974 which he operated until his retirement.
Milburn’s hobbies were fast cars, especially Plymouth and Dodges, camping and hanging out with his friends. He won many trophies drag racing with his brother-in-law at tracks including Brainerd and Harriman in Tennessee, Calhoun, GA and Cherokee, NC. Milburn spent many weeks camping throughout the Midwest and Southern US as well as Big Soddy Creek. After his retirement his shop became a gathering place for friends to hang out, exchange views, yell at each other and tell tall tales. Milburn’s presence will be greatly missed by both family and friends. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others and enjoyed a reputation for honesty and fairness. He left this life the way he wanted to go doing what he loved to do. He was in the process of repairing his backhoe and his death was instant. He was so very, very blessed.

Visitation will be Thursday Oct 4, from 2 to 8 PM and a memorial service will be Friday Oct 5 at 2 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David G. Arnold officiating. Eulogy will be by David Lee Wilson. Burial will follow in Varner Cemetery.
