Tribute

Ann Posey

Ann Maynard Posey departed this world on May 18,2022 at the age of 102. During those 102 years she was a blessing to all those that knew  and loved her. She wore many titles throughout her life but was most lovingly referred to by her family as “Maw”. She was born Annie Laura Morris on December 6, 1919 the 11th and youngest child to Thomas Jefferson Morris and Ada Rice Morris. Her arrival was on Merrill Mountain in Marshall County, Alabama. She lived in Alabama for a short time before her family relocated to Neely’s Bend  near Nashville, Tennessee where she spent the remainder of her formative years. She was a graduate of DuPont High School in Old Hickory, Tennessee. It was there she met her high school sweetheart, Thomas (Tom) Mimms Maynard Jr. They eloped to Franklin, Kentucky on December 31, 1938. After several years in the Nashville and Memphis area they chose to settle in Chattanooga.

Ann worked several years as a secretary but her greatest joy was in being a homemaker and a mother to her 3 children, Pamela Maynard Joyner, Elizabeth Maynard Dill (Rick), Thomas Gower Maynard (Tammy).  As a part of her legacy she leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Spending time with her grand children and great grandchildren brought her such joy in life.

She was quite talented as a seamstress, designing and sewing many clothes for family and friends.  She enjoyed ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and quilting as well leaving many treasures of such for her family  to love. She always had a garden until the later years of her life which kept her busy canning and providing for her family. In the summertime her kitchen counters were always full of fruits and vegetables being processed.  She made assortments of jams, jellies, and pickles, She was adventuresome in so many areas of her life and gardening was one of them.

Ann was quite musical by nature. She love to sing and dance as well as accomplished with the piano and organ. On one occasion she even tried her hand at the ukulele.

While a member at the Hixson Church of Christ her family became interested in the deaf ministry. It was there she developed a love and compassion for the deaf community. Ann served as an interpreter for many of her deaf friends.  She also welcomed them into her home for food and fellowship.  She was highly loved and respected in Chattanooga by the deaf community that knew her.  In the last few years with her memory declining she still enjoyed singing and signing “Jesus Loves Me”.

She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and spent countless hours watching them play. But she was the most proud of her love for the Tennessee Vols. She held season tickets for

many years until she was in her late 80’s.  It was often jokingly said that she would miss her own funeral if there was a Tennessee game being played.

In her later years after Tom’s passing she met and married her second love Edwin Marion Posey.  They enjoyed life together for 18 years traveling and exploring the west until his passing in 2010.

In her final years with her memory and health declining she was a resident at Morning Point in Hixson and finally Martin Boyd Christian Home.

As final wishes Ann chose cremation with burial in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga along with her first love Tom and a portion to be sprinkled on her mother’s grave in Lacey’s Spring, Alabama. Most of Ann’s childhood memories were words spoken so lovingly about her mother.

Burial will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on June 13 at 1:00 with Williamson and Sons Funeral Home assisting.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a charity of their choice.
