Tribute

Mynatt (JR) Carney, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2020. He was born June 24, 1926 in Dayton, TN to the late Mynatt C and Annie Burnett Carney. JR attended Rhea County Schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. JR’s wife of 68 years, Jayne McClure Carney passed away in 2014. He and she retired from DuPont together in 2006. He is predeceased by seven siblings, Garland Carney, Dayton, Mildred Ballard, Dayton, Virginia Hallman, Chattanooga, Jewell Smith, Dayton, Charles Andy, Dayton, Frances Crowe, Hixson and Mary Jane Penney, Signal Mountain. He is survived by one brother, Robert “Bob” Carney, Hixson and several nieces and nephews.

Immediate family members are his son, Bill (Marty) Carney, Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Diane Norris, Hixson; grandchildren are Yancey (Steven) Haas, Richmond, VA, Jesi (John) Shahan, Hixson, Will (Jackie) Carney, Nashville, Emily (Billy) DeBuys, Birmingham, AL; great grandchildren are Finley and Graham Hass, Taylor and Bailey Shahan, Maggie and Lacy Carney and Marion and Liv DeBuys.

JR was a seventy year member of the Daisy Methodist Church. He became an EMT and Paramedic in Soddy-Daisy’s first Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad; served briefly as a North Hamilton County Coroner and was an Election Commission Precinct Chairman for several years. He also volunteered at the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. JR was a life-long Mason belonging to the Dayton, Daisy and Sale Creek Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Alhambra Shrine.
