Curtis Leatherwood

L. Curtis Leatherwood, 95, of Hixson, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord on Monday, August 26, 2019. He was born on February 18, 1924 to Wilburn Neal and Bertie Hicks Leatherwood in Etowah, Tennessee. He grew up in Canton, North Carolina and Tryon, North Carolina where he graduated from Streans High School in 1941. Upon graduation he attended trade school in Norfolk, Virginia and then proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the war he moved to Chattanooga where he met and married the love of his life, Lacie Poteet, on April 17, 1947. He was employed by E.I. Dupont for 32 years retiring at age 58. A talented woodworker and craftsman, he often talked about how much he enjoyed his retirement years and the opportunity to pursue his hobby and spend time with his family. He was a devout Christian and a member of New Salem Baptist Church and the Harvester’s Sunday School Class where he served in many capacities over the years and continued to teach Sunday School until his death. Family and friends will remember his strong faith, joyful spirit, compassion for others, fierce independence and unwavering love. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lacie; infant son, Stephen; parents, and siblings, Nell Dhaemers and Neal Leatherwood and granddaughter, Crystal Moats.

He is survived by his children, Kathy Owen (Sam), David Leatherwood (Debbie) and Jeff Leatherwood (Janice); sisters, Kay Pack and Patricia Gibson; grandchildren, Becky Williams (James), Edward Owen, Stephen Owen, Shannon Leatherwood (Andrea), Shawn Leatherwood (Heather), Brent Leatherwood (Meredith), Laura Laffitte (Ron), Wade Leatherwood, Claire Leatherwood; 9 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 29, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Services will be on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Rogers officiating. Curtis will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the church before the service. Burial will be at National Cemetery with Edward Owen, Brent Leatherwood, Wade Leatherwood, Shawn Leatherwood, Ron Laffitte and Randy Leatherwood serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Stephen Owen and the Harvester’s Sunday School Class.
