Leonard Narrimore
Leonard Allen Narrimore, 88, a lifelong resident of Soddy Daisy and Hixson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 28th, 2017. He was born on August 19, 1929 in a cabin with a stone floor in Roberts Gap. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Narrimore and May Miller Narrimore Johnson, stepfather, Oscar Johnson, beloved wife, Bettye Narrimore, and cherished daughter, Lachone Narrimore.
He is survived by his daughters, Sherry Narrimore Harris, Beverly J. Narrimore, sister, Lodema Bean, son-in-law, Mike Harris, grandsons, Matthew Narrimore Harris and Joshua Dodge Harris, great granddaughter, Lily MacKenna Harris and a large and loved extended family.
Leonard spent an adventurous life and never met a stranger. He had the true “gift of gab”, and loved spinning tales with anyone that cared to listen. He graduated from Soddy Daisy High School and joined the Navy, serving our county on the USS Boxer. After returning home from the U.S. Navy, he married Bettye Jo Schuhmacher who was his partner, his wife, and his true north. He worked at Federal Ceramics and Dupont, then went on to be an entrepreneur, by opening Dallas Fishing Supply. This was his dream come true, where he met so many people and made close friends with so many others. It was more than a business, it was a lesson of life for him, that he loved with passion. His last job before retirement was with the Hamilton County Sherriff’s office, Fugitive Division. He attended Calvary Baptist Church with many of his relatives.
Leonard was a master of the Flea Market world and spent most of his life collecting and selling, but the real joy for him, was to cross paths with so many people. He and his daughter, Chone, spent endless hours going to various places and were traveling buddies. He also had a great artistic talent and spent many years refinishing antique furniture and replicating many pieces as a gifted carpenter and cabinetmaker. But his greatest passion was gospel and bluegrass music. He learned to play the mandolin when he was in his fifties and loved the ring of his Mountain Music that resonated throughout the hollers where he grew up. He was in several bands and played and sang anywhere he could. His biggest success story was that he cut a CD, called “Worn Out”, where he wrote and sang most of the songs. He dedicated one of those songs, “The Lady with the Grey in Her Hair, to his wife, Bettye. Even when he grew too weak to play music, he still loved to listen to music, especially his own.
Leonard Narrimore lived a long and good life and his daughters are grateful that he died peacefully in his sleep. They are also grateful that he woke up in a better place with no more pain or tears and is reunited with his beloved wife and daughter. He will be loved and missed by all that knew him. Services will be 1:00 P.M Tuesday at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with his daughter, Reverend Sherry Narrimore Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Visitation is 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
