“John” David Sisk, Sr., of Hixson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 27, 2023. He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Soddy-Daisy area. John was a member of Soddy-Daisy First Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, William David Sisk and Veneta May Sisk; brother, Jim Sisk; uncle, Alfred “Buddy” May and niece, Terenia Sisk Mumpower and his lifelong best friend, Kenneth Black.
Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Nancy Dailey Sisk; children, Kelley Mitts (Byron) and John David Sisk, II (Kim); granddaughters, Olivia Sisk and Caroline Sisk; lifelong friend, Jean Black; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
John graduated from Kirkman Technical High School Class of 1955. He found his love of art and design while there. John was hired to paint Christmas windows in Downtown Chattanooga and several homes on Missionary Ridge and in the Rivermont area. He continued creating art though out his life winning several awards and prizes.
John joined the Navy in 1957 and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Grand Canyon which served as a destroyer tender. One of the things he enjoyed was being the ships DJ playing music in the “Record Shop”.
John was a man who knew a little about a lot of things and something about most things. He had a curiosity about how things worked or how to make things better which lead him to a career with NASA after being discharged from the Navy. At NASA John participated and contributed to the design of many projects used in the Space Program.
He eventually left NASA and began a lifelong pursuit of inventing and refining processes to make things work better. John was a patent holder and enjoyed a long career in specialty corrugated packaging designing many boxes and displays for large companies across the country.
Most of all John loved his family and community. He was kind, benevolent and proud to be a good husband, father, father in law, grandfather and uncle. Family was his greatest love.
John always looked for the good in everyone and loved sharing Jesus with anyone who would listen. His final words before passing were “I’m ready to see Jesus.”
John will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him but the comfort comes in knowing that “it’s not goodbye…but see you later.”
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Services will be on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David McNabb and Pastor Brandon Johns officiating. Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
