Tribute

Joe Smartt

(Emual Joe Smartt), 89, of Georgetown passed away Saturday, September 17, 2022, with his loved ones by his side.  Joe was one of the kindest men ever.   He never met a stranger.  Joe was always ready to tell of being bit by a copperhead and winning the battle.  He enjoyed feeding and watching birds, and had eight birdhouses in his yard.  Joe loved to mow and make a garden, but his love for his dog, Angel, was unconditional.  Joe worked in coalmines with his father when he was a teenager.  He served in the Army Military Police in the early 1950’s and retired from Combustion Eng. after 35 years as an inspector.  Joe was a member of Mowbray Church of God and attended faithfully for over 70 years.  Joe loved to travel – he and his fiancé, Carolyn, traveled the lower 48 states, Canada, and Old Mexico.  They also went on a cruise to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands where Joe swam with and fed the stingrays.

He was preceded in death by his, parents, Thomas and Sara Smartt; wife, Betty K. Smartt; sister, Reba Daniels, brother, Grady Smartt, and half-brothers, Paul and Oscar Mosgrove.

He is survived by his sons, James Creig Smartt, and Timothy Joe Smartt; brothers, Ottis Smartt, Leonard Smartt, all of Soddy Daisy, and Thomas Smartt Jr. of Lebanon; five grandchildren, James, Joseph, Leilani, Adam and Amber Pugh, his fiancé of 22 years, Carolyn Riddle, of Georgetown, special friends and caregivers, Joy Benson of Georgetown, Paul Riddle of Cleveland, and Stephanie Riddle of Cleveland.

The funeral service will be held at Mowbray Church of God, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. Rev. Grant Chauncey will officiate.  Visitation is from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. at the church.  Interment will follow in Chancey Cemetery.
