Jimmie Teague Irwin, 83, of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee passed away on Monday, August 13. 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

 

Jimmie was born on October 27, 1934 in what was then, Soddy, Tennessee to George Ed and Dorothy Hair Teague. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Tommy Irwin for 56 years. She was a member of the Soddy Daisy High School class of 1952 where she was Homecoming Queen.

 

She attended Tennessee Tech University, receiving a teaching certificate. Jimmie completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the first graduating class of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, the class of 1970. She pursued postgraduate studies at UTC and Trevecca Nazarene College.

 

Jimmie was a third generation educator in Hamilton County. She taught kindergarten at Soddy Elementary School from 1966 to 1968 and at the Bakewell Child Development Center from 1968 to 1970. Jimmie then taught 1st grade from 1970 to 1972 at Allen Elementary. She completed her teaching career at Soddy Elementary School as a 2nd grade teacher from 1972 to 1993. She was named the City of Soddy Daisy’s Teacher of the Year in 1989.

 

She was a member of Soddy Daisy United Methodist Church where she was active in the Chancellor Choir, Martha and Mary’s Bible Study. Jimmie was a member of the Soddy Daisy Montlake Historical Association, Hamilton County Education Association, Tennessee EA and NEA. She was an avid University of Tennessee football fan, having attended games since the 1960’s

 

Her husband, Tommy, precedes Jimmie in death as well as her parents, George Ed and Dorothy Hair Teague, her brother, John Mack Teague, brother and sister-in-law,  George and Bobbie Irwin, son-in-law, Kerry Welker, and nieces, Janice Irwin Kennedy and Deborah Irwin Taylor.

 

Jimmie is survived by her children, Karen (Jeff) Ward, of Soddy Daisy, Katherine Welker of Andersonville, TN and Dr. Chip (Dawn) Irwin of Rapids City, IL. She is also survived by her sister Suzanne (Paul Ed) Teague Parrott, sister-in-law, Judy Breda Teague as well as eight grandchildren, Katherine (Derek) Welker Urton, Megan Ward, Joseph (Morell) Welker, Andy Ward, Blake Irwin, Taylor Irwin, Alex Welker, and Max Welker.  Jimmie was the proud great grandmother of five: Gracie, Charlotte, and Isabel Urton, Luca and Laney Welker. She was expecting her sixth great grandson, Odin Edward Ward- Wilson December 10th of this year. Jimmie will be missed by many nieces and nephews including Jennifer (Rod) Parrott Jack, Max (Paige) Parrott, Curtis (Melissa) Teague, John David (Whitney) Teague, and Chris (Tracy) Teague. Great nieces and nephews include Sherry (Scott) Holt Mast, Christy Taylor Bumpus, Arron Taylor, Courtney Teague, Wesley Teague, Jacob Teague as well as Abby, Caroline, and Tucker Jack; Jack and Sam Mast, Payne and Ryan Bumpus and several cousins.

Services will be held at Soddy United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018 with Rev. J. Todd Kingrea and Rev. Alan Stewart presiding. Ms. Irwin will lie in state one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018 at the funeral home.
