Lt. Mark Kimsey

Lt. D. Mark Kimsey went home to be with the Lord on Saturday August 1, 2020 at Erlanger Hospital. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Donald R. and Elsa E. Kimsey. He lived in Chattanooga since 1979, coming to the area to attend Covenant College to play soccer. Mark quickly found a passion in service to his community with Hamilton County Rescue Squad, which eventually led to a long and stellar career in law enforcement. His time in law enforcement began at Lookout Mountain Police Department, then Red Bank Police Department, and finally with Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department where he started in 1988. Lt. Kimsey moved quickly into the Narcotics Division in 1993 and worked in the Narcotics Division for five years. He moved to patrol in 1995. In 1998 he transferred to the Traffic Division, where he found his passion and excelled at the tedious task of traffic reconstruction. He was known nationally for his remarkable ability in investigating and recreating traffic fatalities with the use of state of the art equipment and programming. He was frequently requested as a consultant and expert witness in the field and in the courtroom. His ability to articulate the details of traffic fatalities was brilliant. He taught and mentored many officers in this area. This led to positions as an educator and instructor. Lt. Kimsey was promoted to Sergeant in the Patrol Division in 2007 then to Lieutenant in 2018, where he worked up until the time of his death. Lt. Kimsey had the uncanny ability to speak his mind with tact and humor. His story-telling prowess was renowned as well as his amazing recall. 
He was reunited with his parents Donald and Elsa Kimsey and twin daughters Emma and Olivia, who died at birth in 1999. He will be dearly missed by his children, Julia Elise Kimsey and Jebediah Billue Kimsey of Chattanooga, TN and Jesse Eliot Kimsey of Rossville, GA; sister and brother-in-law Elisabeth and Wayne Robinson, nephews Ethan, Heath (Ada), and Seth Robinson, niece “Little Lissa” (Connor) Hearon; and numerous cousins. "
Visitation is 10:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Friday, August 7, 2020 at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 P.M. in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
