Brenda Smitherman

Brenda Ann Smitherman, 75, of Hixson, TN, was delivered peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her family on July 17, 2021. She was born on June 18, 1946, in Burnsville, MS, to the late W.T. and Ethel Hardwick. She spent most of her life residing in Memphis, TN.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Tracy Smitherman; devoted daughters, Shannon Ables and her husband Charles of Soddy Daisy, TN, and Stacey Barry and her husband Russell of Hixson, TN; adoring grandchildren, Russell, Jr., Kylie, and Macy Barry, and Chase and Jacob Edge.

If you knew Brenda, you knew of her devotion to her service as church secretary to the Getwell Church of Christ. As part of her work with the church, Brenda was very involved with the publication of the Spiritual Sword quarterly magazine and with the organization of the annual Spiritual Sword lectureship.  Brenda was also known as an avid Memphis Tiger fan. She and Tracy enjoyed attending every home football and basketball game as well as many games on the road. Brenda’s favorite activity was being with her family. She never missed an event or a chance to cheer on her daughters and grandchildren. Being Nana to her five grandchildren was a title she most proudly wore, and she was adored by them all. Her kindness, selflessness, and joyous smile were among her many gifts that her family and friends will always treasure from knowing Brenda. She showed the love of Jesus in everything she did.

Visitation for the family will be on Friday, July 23rd, from 11 AM until 1 PM at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home in Soddy Daisy, TN, with the funeral service following at 1 PM in the chapel.  Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.  The family plans to hold a memorial service for friends and family in Memphis, TN, in the near future.  If you would like to make a donation in Brenda’s memory, the family requests that those be made to the Spiritual Sword in care of Getwell Church of Christ, 1511 Getwell Rd., Memphis, TN 38111.
