Hugh Rick Payne

Hugh “Rick” Payne, of Sale Creek, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on April 19,2024. He was 74 years old. Rick was born June 3, 1949 in Cartersville, Georgia. He was raised in Soddy Daisy. Rick’s family includes his father, Hugh Payne, his mother, Vera Purcell (stepdad- Edwin Purcell), sisters, Deborah Hendrix and Alicia Hendrix, brothers, Doug Payne and Brian Payne, step-sons, Adam Sutherland and Bill Sutherland, grandchildren, Logan Sutherland and Olivia Sutherland. Rick attended Soddy Daisy High School. Following graduation Rick entered the United States Navy on April 16, 1970. Serving his duty stationed aboard the U.S.S. Shangri La. He earned the rank of Seaman during his tenure. Rick received several medals for his recognition these include, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Rick met and married the love of his life, Debbie on June 3, 1999. He spent 30 years as a dedicated Painter for Hamilton County. Rick retired in 2000 to spend more time with his family and his hobbies. He enjoyed classic cars, hunting, fishing, and going to the mountains. Rick really enjoyed traveling with his wife, places like Colorado and abroad. Rick was a member of the Soddy Daisy Cruisers Car Club for many years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vera Purcell; his father, Hugh Payne; and his sister, Debora Hendrix.

Rick is survived by his wife of 24 years, Debbie Payne; his stepsons, Adam (Sherri) Sutherland and Bill (Jennifer) Sutherland; grandchildren, Logan Sutherland and Olivia Sutherland; several cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

The graveside burial will be on Wednesday, April 24th 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Jason Antley officiating.
