March 2, 1945 ~ April 2, 2024 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Tribute

Dr. Bill Greer of Hixson, passed away at his home on April 2, 2024 at the age of 79. Born in Chattanooga to William A and Betty Bowman Greer, Bill was raised in Red Bank and a proud graduate of Red Bank High School, class of 1962.

Bill was a member of the Red Bank High School Hall of Fame. Bill earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Chattanooga and his doctor of dental surgery from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis.

Bill returned to Chattanooga and practiced dentistry for 40 years. He was a member of the Chattanooga Area Dental Society, and the Tennessee and American Dental Associations. He had been a member and officer of the Highland Sertoma Club. In 1984, Bill agreed to serve as the “fill-in” preacher for the Soddy Church of Christ. After over 33 years and 8 months, he retired from that position due to declining health. He also served the Soddy congregation as an elder for 20 years. A dedicated Bible student, he loved preaching and teaching Bible classes and especially loved leading acapella singing.

He served on the boards of directors of Boyd Buchanan School, Greater Chattanooga Christian Services and Children Home, Martin Boyd Christian Center and the UTC Christian Student Center. The Greer Family was named the Chattanooga Area Family of the Year in 1984.

Bill was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James A (Jim) Greer.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia. Son, William A. III (Bill) and wife Jennifer. Daughter, Sara and husband Dr. Matt Richardson, Argyle TX. Grandson, Will Greer, Los Angeles CA, Granddaughters, Ellen Kay and husband, Isaac Antwine of Nashville and Ellie and Amy Kate Richardson of Argyle TX. Sisters Joyce Greer Brown of Chattanooga and Deanna Greer Templeton of Ft. Myers FL. Several nieces and nephews and numerous Greer and Bowman cousins. The family thanks Ashley, Faedra and Christy from Hospice of Chattanooga. Bill donated his body to Vanderbilt University Medical school for research to help in finding the causes and, hopefully, a cure for neurological diseases, especially Multiple System Atrophy and dementia.
